    Courage

Submitted by Patricia Harrell in USA, October 2016

I have so many of the Willow Tree figurines plus the full Nativity. Each piece has a special place in my heart but I think my favorite one is Courage. As a mother to 5 biological children, 9 grandchildren, and many day care children, I have been touched by lifes challenges. I received Courage from a friend when we found out that my grandson had retinoblastoma which is a rare cancer of the eye. It took courage to stand by and help my son and his wife make the decisions needed to treat his cancer which lead to the removal of the eye. By choosing that path rather than try to save the eye by treatment, his cancer was totally removed with the eye and he is celebrating 7 years cancer free! I found it heartbreaking to watch my "baby" make those decisions for his "baby". Since then I have gifted others with the Courage figurine when they faced times when it took extreme Courage to make the right decisions or to press through a storm in their lives. It sits on my shelf as a constant reminder that we can get through anything life throws at us as long as we believe in ourselves and have the Courage to stand strong!

Hello! My name is Stacy and I'm from Missouri. I am a former Hallmark employee and have spent years selling Willow Tree to my customers. I know every piece by heart. They were always my favorite thing to suggest because I could find something special for every occasion. My favorite piece has always been two alike. I've wanted twins ever since I was a little girl. Once I start trying to have a baby, I quickly realized it wouldn't be easy for me. After years of infertility treatments and a miscarriage I was finally pregnant! I found out we were expecting twins at my 3rd appointment. After leaving the appointment I went straight to Hallmark to buy the twin piece I had always dreamed about. I had the perfect pregnancy until Sept 2015. I was 29 weeks pregnant and went in for an ultrasound. I was alway very nervous early in my pregnancy during these appointments but I was an old pro by now. What could go wrong? I only had 9 more weeks to go. That was the day that changed my life. That was the day the nurse said I'm sorry but baby B doesn't have a heart beat. I thought I was dying! I was about to carry both girls to 37 weeks and now have a beautiful 10 month old baby girl. Every time I see my twin Willow Tree I think about my beautiful angel. Thanks for making these special memories for so many families.

I purchased this for a dear friend that I met shortly after I lost my newborn identical twin son. I read her story in a newsletter (passed along to me from a bereavement counselor at my time of discharge). about the loss of her identical twin infant son weeks after my loss. That was almost 21 years ago.. We have remained connected throughout the last 21 years, sharing our happy times, sad times, worry times and celebrations of life , and our lone survivors twins as they grew. We understood one another like no one else! I received a special gift from her upon her receiving my first letter way back when,21 yrs ago. It was a Snow Baby, two little boys hugging. It still sits on my end table in my room. I'll cherish it forever. She recently was in a horrible car accident, and its a miracle shes alive! I purchased "Two Alike" and just had it shipped this week. Now she has a special remembrance from me, and just seeing it, I knew it was perfect! Sisters of the heart we are. Forever !

Today I received "Two Alike" from my best friend, we were instant friends and have so much in common, even in looks, that we are often asked if we are related or sisters. "No", we reply," just best friends and sisters of the soul" with a laugh and a smile. It just goes to show, you don't have to have the same parents to be twins or sisters. This is not my first Willow piece but it still amazes me how each new one I get still gives me a whole new sense of awe, of how it becomes a feeling of its own when it's given to someone. I treasure each of my pieces, because they remind me of my blessings. This last one especially.

I lost my sister. She was ill, but I wouldn't see the seriousness of her illness. She is 2 years younger than I am. We were always together. I planned to donate my kidney to her, but she was too ill to recieve. We had a match, and we were waiting for a better condition of her body. All our hope was the transplantation of my kidney in her. But in April 2014 she had an heart attack and three days later she passed away, leaving us in a total shock behind. She hadn't been conscious, we couldn't speak to each other anymore, she just passed away. She was 51 years old, I am 53. This summer I went to Austria, for a holiday, filled with grief and tears. I love the mountains. In a small village, in a bookshop where I decided to buy some postcards, I saw a few little statues. One was calling me: when I took it in in my hand, I saw the name of the statue was two alike. The statue is now next to the beautiful last photo of me and my beloved sister, made on Christmas day 2013. It simbolises the strong bond between my sister and me.

In March 2011 I gave birth to identical twin daughters. Shortly after I found this piece at my local Hallmark and knew I had to purchase it. I love your collection and while I have a few others this is the only one I ever bought myself. Every time I look at it I think of my girls and the immense love I have for them. Thank you for your beautiful piece.

I have five children, ages 27 to 6. When my older daughter was 14, she insisted we begin the daily routine of standing back to back, comparing our height. She was so eager to grow taller than I am! Thisritual lasted for three years. She bought this Willow Tree for me during that time, hoping it would remind me of this funny thing we did. She is away now in her second year of college. Every time I pass by this, it reminds me of my precious daughter, who still stands at exactly her mother's height! Thank you for making this piece so I can remember always this time in her life.

About 10 years ago I met the most wonderful gal. We instantly had a connection in the Lord. We both love worship music, dance and most of all, Israel. When she moved away I gave her the "Two Alike" figurine to remember our unique and special friendship. We still talk on the phone and are planning a trip to Israel soon.
