    Grandfather

Submitted by Joe Malveira in Walpole, Ma., December 2016

The Grandfather figure is perfect! My son and daughter in law were expecting their first child and lost him at six months due to complications. A baby boy, my grandson, the only boy in the family that would carry on our name. I needed something to have forever to erase the sadness. I found exactly what I needed with your figure. A faceless, nameless child I will never know, with his grandfather. A child I will love forever. All I wanted to do was travel 3,000 miles to the west coast and see and hold him when he was born. So many dreams and thoughts that will never happen. I love you baby grandson!! Today, I have this figure under my Christmas tree, and will forever be close by. Love, Papa Joe

It all started when I was picking up medicine at a drug store. Unfortunately or fortunately, there was a wait so I began exploring the store. Soon, I came across some sculptures, and fell in love with the Grandfather figure. I knew that my Grandfather who loved sculptures would like it, so I bought it and when I got home I packaged it and decided to send it the next day. Sadly the next day on October 5th, 2016 my grandfather passed away. Thinking of the scupture, I opened up the box, unpacked the sculpture, and it now sits on my bedside, reminding me of one of the greatest men I ever knew.

My favourite most meaningful piece is Grandfather. My dad passed away when my son was 3 so the little boy and man look just like how my dad and son looked the last time they would have seen each other. I get a lump in my throat every time I look at it. It is a very cherishes item.

The most meaningful Willow Tree piece for me isn't one I received, but one we gave. My daughter and her best friend, Sarah, were excited to be going through their pregnancies at the same time. Sarah had lost her father at a young age, so she was like a surrogate child to me as the two girls had been almost inseparable growing up. Sadly, Sarah lost her baby during her pregnancy. We gifted her with the "Grandfather" figurine to reassure her that her baby girl is not lost, she is not forgotten, she is not alone. Baby Riley is instead spending her days being rocked and played with and cherished by her Grandfather above, waiting for the day when they can all be reunited again.

I bought this piece for my sister. We lost my Dad back in 2014. Her son was very close to his "Pop Pop", I wanted her to have something to remember the special bond between her son and our Dad!

My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for years. Late last year it finally happened, but we soon suffered from a miscarriage. Two months later we both lost our maternal grandfathers. It was a very hard time for us and I have been searching for a reason to explain it all happening at the same time. Then I found this figurine. It helps to think that while our baby and grandfathers aren't here, they are together somewhere.

My husband of 22 years has always been the rock in our family, raising three boys who adore him, and now helping our oldest son with our three granddaughters who think their K-pa hung the moon. My husband was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 bladder cancer that has already metastasized to the lung and brain. His biggest concern is that he will die one day when he is all alone. This figure reminds me of the many recent times he has had to sit down to catch his breath, or just to conserve his energy. I put my arms around him, touching and holding him, making sure that he knows that I am always right there with him, keeping him safe. I want him to know the vows I took when we got married were never taken lightly, and I will be there with him in sickness and health, until death steals him from our lives. I feel that this figure will remind him of my promise to be with him every step of his final journey, never letting him forget how much I love hime, and how grateful I am to still have him, no matter what time we have left. "You and me" will go into the display case, right next to the Anniversary, Grandmother, Grandfather, Mother and Son, Father and Son, and my favorite, the one he gave me for an earlier anniversary, Together. This is only a small list of the many Willow Tree figures I have arranged in my display case. Each of the Willow Tree figures is extremely special to me. After my husband's death, which is inevitable at this time, I will be able to feel his presence every time I look at our lives told through our Willow Tree figures. So I have now started giving them to my children and grandchildren for special occasions, so they may look upon their figures and remember the part of their life that it represents, hopefully with the pride and awe I feel every time I look at mine.

My husband and I were given a very special Christmas gift from our son and daughter-in-law when we were given grandmother and grandfather figurines thus telling us that we are going to be grandparents for the first time. It was a very special gift and a wonderful way to learn that there is going to be a grandchild in our lives. We are so excited and counting the days.

I saw the figures one day and purchased three; "Anniversary" representing my husband and myself, "Grandmother" representing myself and my granddaughter and "Grandfather" representing my husband and my grandson. I was minding my grandchildren one day and Liam (5) was standing at the figurines, pointing at and naming them. "Anniversary" he decided was Grandma and Pa, "Grandmother" was Mummy and Madison(3), "Grandfather" was he and Daddy. He then turned to me and said "Where is Uncle Dan?" I spent months searching for a figurine of a single male and couldn't find one. Tonight though, there he was; "Quest," which is a young man sitting on books, with a book in his hand and a book at his feet. How appropriate; my son is studying for a degree, so I laughed at the irony and bought it. "Uncle Dan" is now sitting with the rest of the TEAM. Liam will be pleased.

My daughter bought the Grandfather piece for me this past Father's Day. My wife likes angels and has a Willow Tree angel. I had never really connected with any particular piece until I received my gift. I have grandchildren from 2 years old to 25 years old. The piece sits on a small table next to a chair in my "prayer corner." It reminds me of listening to and sharing wisdom with each of my great grandchildren, grandchildern, children and others I come in contact with.

My grandfather passed away this past November, and my best friend gave me the Grandfather sculpture in remembrance of him. I can't tell you how much I love my sculpture. It sits on my piano next to my Grandfather's picture, so that I can remember and see him every day. Thank you Susan for your sculptures that bless so many people in this world.

My father moved away from me a few years ago, and as he is very poorly it was very hard for me. When I went to visit him with my partner and children, he gave me some money for my birthday. I brought this figure, I have several pieces of Willow Tree, but every time I see this piece in particular, it gives me such good memories of times together. It always makes me feel in my heart that we aren't as far away from each other as it seems.
